WORKSHOP OVERVIEW
Join us at the West Portal Gallery in San Francisco for a dynamic, hands-on painting workshop designed to spark creativity, strengthen compositional instincts, and expand your visual language. This immersive five-hour session blends lecture, demonstration, guided painting time, and a supportive group critique – all in a small group setting limited to 12 participants.
Introduction to Watercolor: Fundamental Techniques and Strategies
In this workshop, students will get a better understanding of the nature of watercolors and learn techniques and strategies for painting.
After a brief overview on watercolor as a medium, students will be led through exercises introducing fundamental watercolor techniques:
Mark making - brush loading, using the whole brush;
Single color wash;
Gradient wash;
Wet next to wet painting (broken edges);
Wet into wet painting;
Glazing;
Students will be shown examples of work where these techniques are employed.
During the second part of the workshop students will be led in a paint-along to see how some of the techniques from the morning come together in a painting.

MATERIALS TO BRING
Watercolor paper (9”x12” or larger) that is large enough to comfortably subdivide into smaller sizes. Better quality paper is better, but cheaper, lesser quality paper is also fine. Just understand that performance will vary. Watercolor sketchbooks, are also appropriate. Hot press, cold press, rough...all good.
Container for water;
Small spray bottle (optional);
Rags or paper towels for cleaning brushes;
Masking tape (optional) to subdivide your paper;
Watercolor paints (students' choice of colors);
Pencil, pen or other drawing implement (optional but good to have);
A variety of brushes, ideally not too small. Instructor will have other brushes on hand to experiment with;
ADDITIONAL DETAILS
Arrival: Participants are welcome to arrive up to 20 minutes early to settle in.
Parking: Free parking is available around Wawona & 14th Street. There is a 2-hour limit on weekdays and no time limit for weekends (see map below). Directly in front of the studio you will find meter parking, which is ideal for loading and unloading. There’s a good cafe right across the street and several lunch spots in the area in case you need to refuel.
